3 Reasons To Nix Retractable Leashes
Conventional leashes are safer than retractables. Here's why.
You could say a retractable leash makes life with pup easier. Clip it on and your dog has some autonomy, while you have some control. But trainers caution that the cons far outweigh the pros.
1. Tangled up blues
A retractable leash can quickly tangle around you, your dog and other people and dogs. Unfortunately that may mean trips and falls, abrasions, lacerations and joint dislocations.
2. Control means safety
Your pup could have a unexpected run-in with an aggressive dog or dart into traffic. With a retractable leash you may not have adequate time to get your dog to safety.
3. Teachable moments for pooch
On a retractable leash, your dog has the freedom to run behind and ahead, left and right, to stop and go. That's fine on an offleash trail walk, but retractable leash walks don't teach pup to heel because they release and retract automatically.
Keep in mind that a well trained dog is less likely to be injured. So here's to a healthy, safe pup!
