Height gives a cat a feeling of dominance, or just offers a break from social interaction. Some breeds in particular love heights, like the Abyssinian and Maine Coon.

Since cats are furry hunters, height is an advantage in a confrontation — it’s easier to jump down toward an adversary than jump up.

Door of opportunityClimbing is also part of their urge to play and satisfy a challenge. It amuses me that cats can climb doors. Yep, a cat can make it to the top of a door and just hang out.
