How To Stop A Dog Barking At The Door
A simple way to stop door barking
Dogs can be territorial and we love them for defending the homestead. But too much barking creates an agitation loop for the dog and is annoying for us.
When I heard about this method I thought, Of course! So simple and so effective.

What's the best way to fix nuisance barking
Here's my favorite way to curb annoying barking. A lot of dogs respond to it.
Put a handful of coins inside an empty, clean soda can. You can also use bolts, screws or nuts — it's the metal against metal sound that you want.
Keep the can handy. As soon as the unwanted behavior starts, give the can a short, sharp shake a few feet away from the dog. Then praise your pup as soon as the barking stops.

Why does a can of coins stop the barking?
Dogs' ears are sensitive, especially to high frequency sounds. It's part of their expertise, to detect potential prey and threats from far away. They can hear sounds we can't, which is why dog whistles work.
Dogs' ears are larger than ours so they capture sound more effectively. Plus they have 18 muscles for refined ear movements. Each ear moves independantly in multiple directions to catch faint noises.
When you shake a can of coins the metal jangling against metal creates a burst of high pitched sound that dogs find jarring. The experience interrupts their Defend the Den mode and they stop barking.

Training tips
When training, only give the coin shaker command once. Repeating the same thing teaches your dog to ignore you. And you don’t want to use it too often because sometimes dogs get desensitized.
The coins in a can method is a great deterrant if your dog jumps on guests, too.
